National Zoological Park, New Delhi: A pictorial documentation

with 31 comments

What a pity the Delhi Zoo does not have a website! (update: Mayank, in comments says that the website is http://www.nzpnewdelhi.gov.in/

Well, I made one after my maiden visit to the Zoo on 15 June 2009! 😀

Please note that this pictorial documentation of the zoo misses some aspects and animals but it is still lots given the fact that there was so little on the internet aggregated at one site.

This website is dedicated to children (I love babies)! 😀

Please ‘browse the zoo’ by clicking on the various links in the sidebar.

It has almost everything from the ticket counter to the signboards to the animals. Please note that it is a creative attempt and I have tried to make it quite comprehensive by putting up even the photos of tickets! This blog also has a page on Purana Qila (including a pic of couples getting cosy in public).;)

Feel free to leave your comments on any page. 😀

This is a free blog hosted on WordPress, the world’s best (and most ethical) blogging platform.

I do not make any money from my blogs (ads, if any, have been put by WordPress). This blog was made in less than 3 hours thanks to Windows Live Writer which had made my blogging enormously simple! 😀

To put it bluntly, I was not very happy with the Zoo and the management. I think it could be better. There is a lot of room for improvement. 😦

I am VIKAS, a student with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Read the about me page to know more on me. I have also documented JNU Holi and other aspects of JNU life.  All photos are copyrighted to me but you are free to share them subject to attribution.

  3. Hi there Vikas,

I have been wondering around the web recently trying to find some information about Delhi’s zoo – and I stumbled accross your blog!
Well done for capturing it so well. It really does help me make my mind up about visiting it in September when we come over for our holidays (we are from Manchester, UK). It looks a lot better than the zoo in Jaipur – which I hated!!!
I think the only thing I will struggle with are the Elephants and Bears. Are the Elephants chained up all day?? I remember how stressed the Bears in Jaipur zoo looked and it made me very sad indeed.
Perhaps the Director could spare some of his land and greenery for the Bears!!

Keep up the good work and good luck to you,

    Lynn and Dan

    • Hello Lynn and Dan,

Welcome and thank you for the comments.

I don’ t know whether or not the Elephants are chained up all day but they were in chains when I was there and in all probability it looked as if they are like that all the time!

The Elephants and Bears appeared the most neglected ones.

The director has a very green home inside the zoo only and a lush green park by his office. It is clear that the zoo is suffering from bureaucratic apathy. I will soon write a letter to the Prime Minister and the President of my country and to the director of the zoo about it and informing them of my unofficial website.

By the way, recently the union Environment and forest minister announced the 2020 vision document to revamp the 196 zoological parks in the country. See this link for more: http://www.hindu.com/2009/07/12/stories/2009071260780900.htm

Do mail me your experiences when you visit the zoo in September.

  6. Revealing the IP address did not make you look professional. There’s something called privacy, and you should have kept it in mind.

Anyway, how did you make that technical analysis on your wp.com blog? I have options to do such analysis in my self-hosted blogs, but not in wp.com.

I hope you’ll teach me that thing. 🙂

    • Sajib, thanks for the suggestion. I have deleted that bad comment and my reply to it as well. I will careful in future. Thanks for the suggestion.

You can install statcounter and sitemeter on your blog and it will help. Use the wordpress option [not the javascript].

  8. Hi,

Just searching the website of ZOO and got your initiative. I was doing so to put ny feedback to the management of ZOO as Yesteday when I went to the place find that the place where thousands of people come in do not have proper security arrangement or security check, which was really surprising. Its high time we must take lesson from what happened in mumbai. Let me know if we all can do something to take up this issue with government.

    February 22, 2010 at 4:12 PM

    • Sheetal, you can file an RTI to the govt. on this. You can file an RTI with the Central Zoo Authority. You are right; there is hardly any security there.

And you could have left your email here.

      • Hi Vikas,

How come RTI would help in this case? what should I ask from them???

  10. Had been to the zoo last week only. The security will not allow any eatables….. not even a biscuit is allowed to be taken inside. However inside there are many kiosks which sells cold drinks, water, ice creams, small eatables etc. There are many drinking water points available inside zoo.

  12. Hey Dude !!

Please avoid posting wrong comments on Delhi Zoo. You should have contacted the officials before going ahead and posting such comments. Following is the link for the Delhi Zoo

    • Mayank,

Sorry for that. If you are an administrator/employee there do hire some IT guys who will tell you how to optimise a site. IF you search ‘Delhi zoo’ in Google, you are nowhere. The zoo and the site both need major improvements. I will just correct the info here.

  13. Very good!
And know more about Delhi, New Delhi and NCR….visit..
    http://www.delhihelp.com
Because Delhi help websites provides the one stop information of New Delhi, Delhi and NCR regarding
Delhi tourism, shopping, NCR hotel, cheap and best hotel in NCR, fun, lifestyle, news and updates, commonwealth tickets and many more.

  15. I wanted to know the timings and searched google, obviously thinking that they would have an official (but rather basic html) site. But they clearly dont, and i came to ur blog.
I havnt been to the Delhi zoo since YEARS, even though i have lived in Delhi ALL MY LIFE. Used to go there pretty often when i was little
I really want to go this weekend. But i am afraid that seeing the condition of the animals there is just gonna bug and annoy me to no end.
I think I might suck it up and face the reality.
Might even be able to do something about it-help out.
Btw if you know of any volunteer programme or something like that for the delhi zoo do let me know!
    THANKS!
    You have a great blog-awesome effort :)!!

    • Hi Classy&Fabulous (you may choose some other name; glad it didn’t go to spam box as spam filters could be sensitive),

      Thanks for the comments.

Well, I think you must go to the Zoo now as it has been ages (as you yourself admit).
Closing your eyes to reality won’t change anything. The condition is not very bad except for some animals.
Do carry a quality camera and shoot pics. You can write to mags like Down To Earth after returning and doing some official research (like writing to management and minister) to ‘help out’.

I do not know of any volunteer programs but you can contact PETA or Greenpeace (though the former often exaggerate things)
Yes, the so called official website of the zoo (as suggested by Mayank) is good for nothing.

(see your email for full version of this reply; check spam box if it’s not in inbox)

PS: I also wanna visit the place, again.
